Rama V Fine Thai Cuisine (Ala Carte)

Overview:
Rama V is a Thai Restaurant serving fine Thai cuisine, located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and has won a string of awards, i.e. rated one of Malaysia's best restaurant by Malaysia Tatler's Magazine and achieved Top Food 40 status by TimeOut KL. Although situated in the city, it resonates a zen-like ambiance coupled up with its vintage decor of Buddha statues, lush greeneries and lotus-filled ponds. It almost feels as if you're on a getaway in the outskirts of Bali when you're in the restaurant. After hearing so much (good things) about this place, I could not wait to experience it for myself.

Chor Ladda: Flower shaped dumplings stuffed with minced chicken and peanuts

Chor Ladda was a must-have from Rama V. This was very much talked about in other food blogs and even as you walk in the door step, pictures of this beautifully crafted delicacy can be seen strewn across the advertising board. If you're thinking that this would taste savory (similar to chinese dumplings), you'll be surprised as the peanuts stuffed inside over-powers the taste of the minced chicken and is more on the sweet side. Nonetheless, if you're a "nut-lover", no pun intended, you'll love this.

Soft shell crab salad

Rattanakosin Platter

For appetizers, we had the Rattanakosin Platter to share. This dish has a combination of the most delicious fried dishes comprising of spring rolls, fried Thai fish cake, fried squid, minced prawn in golden crispy batter and soft shell crab. The sweet and sour sauces were a perfect garnish to this dish. FYI, Rama V offers many different platters, which are all named after places in Thailand. "Rattanakosin" for instance, is a historic place in Bangkok where the Grand Palace and Wat Pho is. Doubt the name has any relation to the dishes in the platter though.

Poe Tak (left) and Tom Yam Kai (right)

Thai food is never complete without tom yam! This spicy broth is the main reason why Thai food has made it close to the top of my favorites. Poe Tak is a clear fish soup with oyster mushrooms. Tom Yam Kai n the other hand, is a reddish sour and spicy soup with mixed seafood. The reddish colour in the tom yam is due to the inclusion of red chilli paste.
Just by looking at the color, I had a general perception that the clear soup would be less spicy, but how wrong I was. Both were almost equally as spicy due to hot chili pepper seeds!

Pineapple fried rice with shrimp coral

Nuer Pad Ka Pao

The Nuer Pad Ka Pao is a sauteed minced beef dish cooked with hot basil and chili. This dish complimented the pineapple fried rice and is worth a try.

Steamed fish with lime
Extreme spiciness alert! This fish is filled with chili padi and tastes like a minefield with every mouth. Even after scraping off the chili, this dish still made me tear. Nonetheless, the lime adds a zesty taste to the sauce and if your tolerance for spicy food is good, this fish is pretty kick-ass.

Deep fried garoupa fish served with 3 taste chili sauce
Because one fish is never enough.

Tab Tim Krob
This dish is why dessert stomachs (a secondary stomach reserved solely for desserts!) exists. I fell in love with this dish ever since I first tasted it in MyElephant. This cold dessert is a mixture of red water chestnuts ( red rubies) with slices of jackfruit and coconut milk is sooo yumz. But remember to eat this fast and not let it linger, as the shaved ice will melt and dilute the taste. Writing about this makes me crave.
I shall stop.

Our total bill for 8 pax came out to about RM700 which was pretty worth it and we had a satisfying, tummy-rubbing lunch. Note that discounts ranging from 15%-30% are available for those with Standard Chartered and Citibank credit cards.

The backyard of the restaurant with chalets for private functions
Rama V also offers chalets for private functions with customized menus to suit your preference. Nevertheless, to book for these chalets there are extra charges.
Besides that, catering services are also offered for birthday celebrations, weddings, etc.

Would highly recommend this place for those looking out for a meal of exquisite, authentic Thai food in a cultured and majestic setting. Ar Roy Mak Mak! :)
